So, as you may have noticed, I've decided to dust off the old Whirled Peas and Carrots to document our little adventure. It seems like the best way to disseminate the most information to all the people who've shown an interest. We all know I'm not awesome at this, but in the spirit of adventure, come with me now...
"Go West Young Man" Family Rock Tour 2016
Day 1: Saturday, March 19, 2016
We were up and out the door by 6:24, which was only 24 minutes behind schedule. If you know us well, that's pretty awesome. We stopped at T.Ho's for some breakfast, which was only a disaster because everyone got exactly what they ordered and not the double double chocolate doughnut that Jack ordered, and then made our way to our very first stop: Niagara Falls. Some people have questioned my reasoning for taking the time to make this stop, but if you're going to start an EPIC road trip near an epic road trip destination, you should probably just start there. Maybe it's not such an epic road trip destination. Maybe its just an epic NYC bus destination, but still. I figured one awesome natural wonder to another was a good way to start. So we went. And it was cold. And the kids cried. And I had trouble getting the shot I wanted. Yes, this is exactly how our road trips go. But we left the falls only 4 minutes behind schedule, and I was optimistic. But then we had to stop 2 more times on our way out of town. Whatever. We got this as our parting gift, and it was a beautiful morning to just drive.
We stopped in Galena, OH for lunch. Alum Creek State Park promised picnic tables, and I heard there was a giant tree hiding somewhere near an ice cream stand. And a GIANT tree it was. I've seen sequoias, and this wasn't that big. But it was still impressive. We tied some yarn around it and then measured the yarn. It was 346 inches around at the point we measured. We couldn't reach the widest point.
12 hours later, we finally arrived in Cave City, KY. Here are our accommodations for the night. Epic road trips also require a bit of kitsch. What's kitschier than a concrete wigwam from the 1930s?
